What Is GOLS Certified? The Standard for Organic Latex

GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) is the certification that determines whether latex in a mattress is genuinely organic. Like GOTS for textiles, it provides a third-party verified framework that holds brands accountable to verifiable organic standards throughout the latex supply chain.

What GOLS Certifies

GOLS certifies that latex is produced from organically grown Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree) plantations — no synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or herbicides. The standard also covers processing: no harmful chemical additives in the vulcanization process, low emissions in the finished latex, and fair labor practices throughout the supply chain.

Requirements for Certification

GOLS certified latex must contain at least 95% certified organic raw material. The certification covers the entire production chain from plantation to finished latex — each step must be independently audited annually by an accredited certification body. The standard is maintained by OneCert International and ICEA.

GOLS vs “Natural” Latex

“Natural” latex simply means the latex is derived from rubber trees rather than synthetic petroleum-based rubber. It says nothing about how those trees were grown (organic vs. conventional farming), the processing methods used, or labor conditions. “Natural” is a marketing term with no legal definition or third-party verification. GOLS certification is the verifiable version of the organic claim.

GOLS vs Oeko-Tex

Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certifies that a finished product has been tested for harmful substances and meets safety thresholds for human contact. It doesn’t require organic farming or supply chain transparency. A GOLS-certified product also meets or exceeds Oeko-Tex requirements, but they’re measuring different things. GOLS is a higher and more comprehensive standard for organic latex specifically.

Brands Using GOLS-Certified Latex

Avocado Green Mattress, Birch by Helix, PlushBeds, and Saatva’s Zenhaven all use GOLS-certified latex and display verifiable certification details. The Avocado Green Mattress is the flagship example — GOLS certified latex paired with GOTS certified cotton and wool.

Our Verdict: GOLS certification is the only reliable way to verify that latex in a mattress is genuinely organic. If organic latex is a priority — for health, environmental, or ethical reasons — look for the GOLS seal with a verifiable certificate number, not just the word “natural.”
