If you’re shopping for an organic mattress, you’ve likely seen the GOTS certification label — but what does it actually mean, how rigorous is the standard, and how do you verify it’s legitimate? Here’s the complete breakdown.
What GOTS Stands For
GOTS is the Global Organic Textile Standard — an international framework for certifying that textile products (fabrics, fibers, and finished goods) meet verified organic production and processing standards. It covers both the agricultural origin of fibers and the manufacturing process, including dyeing, finishing, and social compliance.
What the Standard Requires
For a product to be GOTS certified: at least 95% of the fiber content must be certified organic (for the “organic” label) or at least 70% (for the “made with organic materials” label). The entire supply chain — from farm to final product — must be certified and audited annually. Processing must avoid toxic dyes, formaldehyde, and chlorine bleach. Workers in certified facilities must meet fair labor standards.
What It Covers in Mattresses
In a GOTS-certified mattress context, it covers the cotton fabric and the wool fill used in the comfort and cover layers. It does not cover foam or latex (those are covered by CertiPUR-US and GOLS respectively). A mattress claiming “GOTS certified” typically means its fabric and wool components are certified — not necessarily every material in the mattress.
How to Verify
The GOTS certification database (global-standard.org/public-database) lists all certified facilities and products. You can search for specific brands or facilities to verify claims. Legitimate certifications include a transaction certificate number that can be traced through the database. Brands that display the GOTS seal without a traceable certificate may be greenwashing.
