Zoned support is one of the most meaningful engineering advances in modern mattress design — and one of the most poorly explained in marketing materials. Here’s a clear breakdown of what zoned support actually is, how it works, and who benefits most from it.
The Basic Concept
A zoned support mattress uses different firmness levels in different regions of the sleep surface — typically providing softer support under the shoulders and firmer support under the hips and lumbar region. The goal is to maintain neutral spinal alignment regardless of sleep position, rather than using a single uniform firmness that compromises somewhere.
How Zoning Is Implemented
Coil-based zoning: different coil gauges (thicknesses) are used in different zones — thicker coils in the lumbar region provide more resistance; thinner coils at the shoulders allow more give. Foam-based zoning: different foam densities are cut and assembled side by side. Some mattresses (like Casper’s Wave) use a routing technique to create variable-density foam in a single piece.
Who Benefits Most
Side sleepers benefit most significantly from zoned support. The lateral sleeping position creates a wide gap between the shoulder, waist, and hip — uniform firmness can’t support all three zones simultaneously. Zoning fills the waist gap while allowing the shoulder and hip to sink appropriately. Back sleepers also benefit from lumbar zone reinforcement that maintains the natural spine curve without pushing the lower back up.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers have more complex zoning needs — they often need firmer support under the hips to prevent lumbar hyperextension, and softer support under the chest. Some specialized stomach-sleeper mattresses address this, but it’s less commonly implemented well than side/back zoning.
Notable Zoned Mattresses
Saatva Classic uses a lumbar zone enhancement in its coil system. Casper Wave Hybrid uses 5-zone ergonomic foam routing. Helix Midnight Luxe uses zoned micro-coils. Purple Hybrid achieves a similar effect through the Grid’s natural pressure response. WinkBed uses targeted lumbar reinforcement.
