Purple Mattress Review: Is the Grid Technology Worth the Luxury Price?

The Purple mattress is genuinely unlike anything else in the sleep industry. Where most premium mattresses compete on foam quality or coil sophistication, Purple has built their brand around a proprietary Hyper-Elastic Polymer Grid technology that claims to eliminate pressure points entirely while maintaining perfect firmness. After 45 nights of testing across the Purple Premium lineup, here’s our honest assessment.

What is the Purple Grid?

The Purple Grid is a 2-inch (or 3-inch in the Purple Plus) layer of GelFlex® Hyper-Elastic Polymer arranged in a geometric grid pattern. The grid is engineered so that the walls of each grid square collapse under pressure points (hips, shoulders) while remaining firm elsewhere. This creates what Purple calls “no pressure support” — the feeling of floating rather than sinking.

The Sleep Experience

The Purple is genuinely one of the most distinctive sleep experiences in the industry. It doesn’t feel like foam, it doesn’t feel like latex, and it doesn’t feel like springs. It feels like sleeping on a firm but yielding surface that responds to pressure with a kind of buoyant support. Side sleepers in particular reported exceptional shoulder and hip relief.

Temperature Performance

The grid design excels at temperature regulation. The open grid structure allows air to circulate freely beneath the sleeper — a significant advantage over traditional closed-cell foam. Hot sleepers consistently rated the Purple as one of the coolest-sleeping mattresses in our testing pool.

Verdict: 8.4/10

The Purple Premium is a legitimately innovative luxury product that deserves its premium positioning. It’s not for everyone — those who prefer the traditional innerspring or memory foam feel may find the grid sensation unfamiliar. But for hot sleepers, side sleepers, or anyone looking for something genuinely different, the Purple Premium delivers.
